Early Literacy and Kindergarten Readiness Specialist
900 Hour Position
Approximately 20 hours/week
Service Location: Tucson, AZ
Service Dates: September 1, 2018 – July 31, 2019
I. ORGANIZATIONAL PURPOSE AND BACKGROUND
The mission of the Pima County Public Library (PCPL) is to transform lives by educating, inspiring, and connecting people. PCPL is committed to serving the literacy needs of the residents of Pima County and continues to build strong community partnerships to create cross-spectrum learning opportunities in collaborative settings.
PCPL is seeking an Early Literacy and Kindergarten Readiness Specialist to improve PCPL libraries’ early literacy programs. The AmeriCorps State member will research and develop curriculum focused on early literacy and kindergarten readiness in libraries. Once presented, they will then train staff on the curriculum and evaluate the pilot program.
II. PROJECT FOCUS AREAS AND ACTIVITIES
A. Program Research and Investigation: The State member will learn about current early literacy practices and observe library story times. In addition, they will research kindergarten readiness program models and readiness assessments.
B. Curriculum Development: The State member will develop a standard kindergarten readiness curriculum for all PCPL libraries to use. They will also assist with identifying, creating and organizing program materials and supplies and promotional materials.
C. Staff Training Workshop Development and Assistance: The State member will develop a staff training outline and assist with staff training workshops.
D. Program Presenting and Evaluation: The State member will develop an evaluation method for the program as well as present and evaluate the pilot program.
III. Requirements and Benefits
A. Education, Skills and Abilities
o Age 17 or older
o Degree in early childhood education, elementary education, or people-focused field
o Program management including the creation and implementation of a communications
and marketing plan
o Experience working with adults in an educational environment
o Experience working with diverse populations and cultures
o Data analysis experience and familiarity with Word, Excel, PowerPoint, etc.
o Strong written and verbal communication skills
o Demonstrated ability to work independently and in a team setting in a consistent, energetic, and positive manner
o Effective problem-solving skills
o Ability to understand the "big picture" while completing detail oriented tasks
o Friendly and effective interpersonal skills
o Fluency in another language is a plus
AmeriCorps State Member Benefits (900 Hour)
● $6,265 living allowance during term of service
● Upon completion of service, part-time (900 hour) AmeriCorps members receive a $2,907.50 education award that can be applied to educational costs or student loans
● Members participate in 10 (2-hour) trainings that qualify them for a Certificate in Civic Leadership and 4 college credits from Prescott College
