Space of Her Own is a mentoring program serving fifth-grade girls in the city of Alexandria, VA. Mentors and mentees meet once per week to enjoy dinner together and work on a creative arts project. Art is the catalyst for helping open the conversation and solidify a strong bond. Projects can range from designing mirror mosaics to completing one's own photography exhibit to constructing and crafting a lamp. The common link through all of the projects is that they allow the girl to express herself and will be used in a room renovation at the end of the year. Mentors team up in late April and early May to renovate each girl's space to truly give her a space of her own which encourages self-confidence and self-worth. Once mentors and mentees complete the first year together, they are welcome to become a part of the SOHO Sisterhood where they will continue their mentoring relationship.
