Uptown Stories inspires kids to discover and develop their inner voices in a diverse community of writers. Based in
Washington Heights, we offer small-group creative writing workshops for children ages seven to sixteen, led by master teachers and professional authors. To ensure our workshops are accessible to all children, tuition is pay-what-you-can. Uptown Stories creates an exciting, challenging, and supportive community in which young authors thrive.
Workshop wizards provide extra support to instructors in workshops. Duties can include setting up workshop space and supplies, taking attendance, assisting students one-on-one with their writing, offering encouragement, actively engaging with students, assisting with activities, under instructor's supervision assisting with behavior management and supervision, distributing handouts and snacks, taking photos and videos in workshop, assisting with the
collection and organization of student writing in preparation for the reading and anthology produced at the end of the semester, answering general inquiries from parents, breaking down the workshop space, putting away supplies, and ensuring the space is ready for the next workshop or group to use.
We currently need a workshop wizard/s for three of our creative writing workshops for the duration of our Fall Semester:
The Elements of Fiction, Tuesdays 3:00pm - 5:30pm, Sept 25 - Nov 27
The Game of Poetry, Thursdays 3:45pm - 6:15pm, Sept 27 - Nov 29
Girls Rising, Fridays 3:45pm - 6:15pm, Sept 28 - Dec 7
If you have experience with middle school aged students and possess empathy, great communication skills and a sense of humor, come help kids fall in love with writing. A passion for reading, writing, education, and the arts are especially welcome.
