Purpose of the Position:

Representatives serve as greeters and guides to visitors at the Memorial. A volunteer in this position will often be the only personal contact visitors have at the Memorial and are important to how the Memorial reaches out to servicewomen and the public. The Memorial represents the story of women’s service, and as a volunteer at the Memorial, you will help honor the servicewomen, preserve their stories, and educate the public.

Responsibilities and Duties:

·       Welcome visitors to the Memorial and Education Center

·       Operate the visitor services desk and computer

·       Distribute printed information

·       Provide interpretations and answer visitors’ questions

·       Encourage the registration of servicewomen in the Register database

·       Begin and introduce a film in the theatre

·       Assist event and program attendees

·       Give tours of the monument and its exhibits


·       Communication skills—volunteers will work with visitors in groups and one-on-one

·       Willingness to learn and speak to groups about the history of women in the military

·       Ability to work with a team to provide visitors the best experience

·       Basic computer skills—to run the film and videos

·       Ability to get to and from the Memorial

Time Commitment:

Volunteers are expected to work a minimum of 16 hours a month in four 4-hour shifts during operation hours (8:00am-5:00pm). It is preferred these four shifts are spaced out throughout the month—one shift a week.  Some events may occur after hours, and a volunteer may be asked to help with shifts for these occasions.


Our volunteers will be given extensive training to ensure they are comfortable with their tasks and are able to learn and improve. Visitor Services Representative Volunteers will attend an initial orientation and two 2-hour training sessions, including shadowing a tour guide and practicing their own tour.
