The following position is a one year (November 2017-November 2018) AmeriCorps VISTA position at Bard High School Early College Baltimore in Baltimore City and sponsored by Strong City Baltimore. At BHSEC Baltimore, like the six other Bard early colleges across the country, students can earn up to 60 college credits and graduate with both a high school diploma and an associate's degree in liberal arts from Bard College. All of this is accomplished at no cost to students and their families.

Contribute to the fight against poverty by enhancing family and community involvement in the student’s academic life! The project’s overall goal will be to increase the afterschool enrichment and family engagement opportunities provided by the school, thereby strengthening the school as an institutional option for students of Baltimore City.

The VISTA will:

1)     Develop a database of family and community volunteers who would be active in the school through chaperoning, performing workshops, etc.

2)     Work with families to create a plan that is reflective of the school’s needs and wants

3)     Recruit volunteers from the community to plan and implement family engagement activities

Bard High School Early College Baltimore seeks a VISTA to help our growing school continue to expand its capacity to make a college education accessible to traditionally underserved students in Baltimore City. The VISTA member will develop a robust plan to improve family/community engagement and will recruit from their community to bring more volunteers into the school both during the day and after school.

AmeriCorps VISTA (Volunteers in Service to America) is not a job per se, but a full time national service opportunity. Benefits include: living allowance, relocation and child care assistance if eligible, health allowance, monthly travel reimbursement, choice of an education award or cash stipend, and non-competitive eligibility for federal employment upon completion. Preferred candidates will be at least 18 years of age, demonstrate relevant experience for the position, and exhibit professionalism, commitment to service, and leadership potential.

Strong City’s mission is to build and strengthen neighborhoods and people. For more than four decades, Strong City has secured the resources of VISTA members to build sustainable change and fight poverty in our neighborhoods. Strong City-sponsored AmeriCorps VISTA members receive a solid foundation of skills they can use as a springboard for careers in government, nonprofits, education, and much more.
