Description

The YMCA of Greater New York, which serves New York City’s extraordinarily diverse immigrant population, is seeking energetic and disciplined ESOL (English to Speakers of Other Languages) volunteers to assist in our New Americans Welcome Center program.

Empower new immigrants with the confidence and skills they need to achieve their goals by sharing your knowledge of the English language and American culture. By working alongside our professional ESL teachers, you will gain valuable hands-on experience in the classroom and have the chance to develop your own personal teaching style while making a difference in the community. Our volunteers assist teaching staff in ESOL classes for adults whose proficiency levels range from beginning literacy to high intermediate. Students in our ESL classes often continue on to U.S. Civics, Computer Skills Training, Job readiness, and/or GED preparation. We will provide you with all the training, resources, and materials you need to be successful.

We ask that volunteers commit to a minimum of 3 hours/week for 12 weeks. For July-December we have openings for Monday-Thursday 10am-1pm and 6-9pm.

REQUIREMENTS Uphold and model the YMCA core values of respect, responsibility, honesty and caring. Show creativity and patience in working with adults with varying degrees of English proficiency. Must have excellent written and verbal English communication skills. Bilingual in Spanish, French, Arabic and/or other languages is preferred. Previous teaching experience is a plus, but not required.

ABOUT US The New Americans Welcome Centers serve as multilingual information resources and referral centers, and provide immigrant families with a wide array of free instructional, vocational, recreational, family support, and human services. Classes offered include English as a Second Language, GED Preparation, Citizenship Preparation, Computer Literacy and Job Readiness.
