“Dig In” as a Docent at Maine Mineral & Gem Museum
Do you have a special interest in minerals and gems or meteorites? Would you like to join our team by donating your time to Maine’s new premier science museum? Consider becoming an MMGM docent!
The Maine Mineral & Gem Museum will open in the fall of 2018 and will house the largest collection of Maine minerals available. It will also house one of the largest contemporary collection of meteorites. Located in the quaint village setting of Bethel, the new museum will be an educational asset to the state and a tourist attraction.
Docents will be key to the Maine Mineral & Gem Museum’s educational programming. By facilitating discussion and learning, docents enhance the visitor experience and provide a vital link between the exhibits and the audience. Docents will be provided extensive training about museum exhibits. They lead tours of museum exhibitions for visitors of all ages.
Prospective docents will participate in a comprehensive training course, which will be first offered in September of 2018. The curriculum includes the history of mining in the state, basic mineralogy and geology and an introduction to meteorites—all of which supports the museum’s exhibit narratives. Classes will meet once a week and be taught by museum curators, guest speakers, and seasoned docents.
MMGM is looking for students, retirees, seasonal or full-time residents—anyone who wants to meet like-minded individuals, learn about minerals, gems and meteorites, and serve the museum community.
