Catholic Charities strives to find permanent solutions to crisis situations by offering clients the tools and resources they need to achieve greater self-reliance and stability in their lives. Services are provided to anyone who comes to the agency in need, regardless of race, ethnicity, gender, age or religious belief.


Today, Catholic Charities operates 22 community centers and seven homeless shelters, as well as over 50 programs serving the poor including: food pantries; thrift stores; in-home services for homebound seniors; refugee resettlement; youth employment services; counseling; affordable before-and-after-school child care; immigration assistance; pre-school for children of low income families; and temporary worker centers. In addition, one of the agency’s programs is the Catholic Youth Organization (CYO), which coordinates interscholastic athletics for elementary schools of the Archdiocese of Los Angeles.

As a HR Assistant volunteer you will provide administrative support for the human resources functions, including maintaining employee files, processing change of status forms, compiling personnel statistics and providing information to employees regarding personnel forms and records, maintaining attendance records and other such work of the human resources department. Maintains records on sick leave, vacation, and other absences. May compile statistics for management’s use. May handle paper flow for periodic reviews. May compile special reports such as insurance, COBRA, OSHA, etc. may screen applicants, maintain requisition logs, and conduct employee orientations.


  • May respond to basic questions from managers and employees regarding personnel and policies.
  • Interacts with Department Directors and staff in implementation of Human Resources procedures, and functions.
  • Receives and refers all visitors, clients and employees; has primary responsibility for answering department main telephone line.
  • Processes internal tracking documentation for all employees, including review for accuracy and completeness.
  • Distributes, completes data entry and filing of all employee internal tracking documents
  • Input data into HR Database as needed
  • Distributes all benefit and notifications to employees as required.
  • Tracks employee Leaves of Absence for total time of and compliance with Personnel Practices.
  • Maintains Job List, Job Requisition log book, and recorded Job Line.
  • Prepares word processing documents, including narrative and statistical reports, letters, and manuals from handwritten or typed copy or brief oral instructions.
  • Performs secretarial duties, including typing, filing, faxing, and photocopying.
  • Opens, sorts and forwards all department mail to appropriate staff persons when HR Assistant is out. Prepares outgoing department mail.
  • Maintains employee files and records.
  • Prepares orientation packets and materials.
  • Reviews and prepares department bills for payments.
  • Orders office supplies.
  • Maintains Job List, Job Requisition log book, and recorded Job Line.
  • Prepares word processing documents, including narrative and statistical reports, letters, and manuals from handwritten or typed copy or brief oral instructions.
  • Performs secretarial duties, including typing, filing, faxing, and photocopying.
  • Opens, sorts and forwards all department mail to appropriate staff persons when HR Assistant is out. Prepares outgoing department mail.

  • Prepares orientation packets and materials.

Qualifications

One to three years of related experience working in an office environment and handling confidential information.  Experience working with Microsoft office software and answering phones. Must have strong organizational skills.
