Executive Director

Help Educate is a 501(c)3 charitable organization dedicated to international development and built on the idea that education has the power to transform individuals and communities. We work with local Nicaraguan committees in rural communities to identify students with the greatest potential for making a positive impact in their communities. We provide these students with university scholarships and leadership development training to build their careers and move Nicaragua forward. Help Educate's students are primarily from rural communities and attend nearby Nicaraguan universities.

Help Educate is an all-volunteer organization managed by individuals across the U.S. and Nicaragua, and guided by a Board of Directors. Help Educate was founded by Returned Peace Corps Volunteers and continued its expansion into new communities via collaboration with Peace Corps Nicaragua.

Position

The Executive Director (ED) manages and executes Help Educate’s overall strategy and day-to-day operations by leading Help Educate’s Management Team. The ED manages a team of volunteer staff, oversees programming in Nicaragua, oversees finance, operations, development, and M&E. The ED works with and reports to the Board of Directors, in developing and executing Help Educate’s Strategic Plan. A deep understanding of international development, nonprofit operations, conditions in rural Central America, and nonprofit business planning will be necessary to successfully execute these responsibilities. This is a volunteer position, but opportunities may exist to develop funding to support a paid role.

Responsibilities

Leadership & Management:

  • Engage and energize Help Educate’s Management Team, Board Members, event committees, partnering organizations, and donors

  • Lead, coach, develop, and retain Help Educate’s Management Team
  • Develop timelines and resources necessary to achieve the organization’s mission and strategic goals
  • Develop and track the organizational budget and annual work plan in collaboration with management team
  • Review quarterly financial reports, submit financial information to accountant, and field financial questions
  • Ensure ongoing programmatic excellence, rigorous educational and leadership development, and consistent quality of finance and administration, fundraising, communications, and information management
  • Oversee monitoring and evaluation of programmatic outcomes in collaboration with the Program Director and Board of Directors
  • Fundraising & Communications:
  • Collaborate with Development Director and Board Chair to identify opportunities to thoughtfully expand revenue generating and fundraising activities to support existing programming and operations
  • Collaborate with Communication Director to engage with existing and potential donors
  • Planning & Strategy:
  • Guide Board of Directors in creating Strategic Plan
  • Assess organizational progress toward strategic objectives with Board of Directors through M&E
  • Build strategic partnerships and alliances in Nicaragua with community leaders, local governments, businesses, or nonprofit organizations to further the mission
  • Build partnerships within the business, nonprofit, government, or multilateral sectors in the US whose alliances could further the mission

The Executive Director will be thoroughly committed to Help Educate’s mission, vision, and values. All candidates should have leadership, coaching, and/or relationship management experience. Concrete demonstrable experience and other desired qualifications include:

  • Management experience; track record of effectively leading and ability to point to specific examples of having developed and operationalized strategies that have taken an organization to the next stage of growth
  • Commitment to quality programs and data-driven program evaluation

Time Commitment
