Member Duties : Develop a Business Services Framework Plan that inspires businesses to collaborate with their local American Job Center (AJC), and activity that inspires businesses to promote local AJCs as Hawaii’s primary workforce development resource. Develop statewide layoff aversion strategies, including labor market information, to serve business needs at any stage of their operation. Work with Kauai, Maui, and Hawaii County VISTA to coordinate statewide operational policies that enhance the customer experience, promote business engagement activity and partnerships, emphasize industry/sector outreach by Workforce Development Boards (WDBs) and Committee members, recruitment of local businesses as AJC advocates, layoff aversion strategies, and to lay the foundation for a brand recognition campaign. Produce a manual of best practices with consistent statewide branding and messaging.


Service Description : The Hawaii Workforce Development Council (WDC) and its network of American Job Centers (AJCs) leverage partner resources to assist individuals with employment barriers to secure sustainable employment. The network also provides workforce development support to local businesses during any point in their business cycle. In 2019, the WDC is coordinating its statewide capacity through implementation of policies that enhance the customer experience, promote business partnerships, scopes of work that emphasize Workforce Development Boards (WDBs) and Committee member activity, layoff aversion strategies, and a brand recognition campaign. Successful VISTA applicants are committed to aligning local policies and activity with state and federal mandates, to engaging board and committee members in industry/sector outreach activity, and to developing layoff aversion strategies that businesses can apply at any point in their operational cycle. With the additional goals of expanding AJC brand awareness and developing community partnerships, the ideal VISTA candidate also demonstrates strong organizational skills, follow through, attention to detail, and exceptional oral, written, and interpersonal communication skills. This position is located Oahu in the WDC Honolulu office and is part of a statewide VISTA cadre assigned to workforce development on the neighbor islands of Kauai, Maui and Hawaii Island. To coordinate and align all WDC VISTA projects with state and federal mandates, the Oahu VISTA will convene weekly conference calls with the VISTAs deployed on Kauai, Maui and Hawaii Island, and meet weekly with their site supervisor. The VISTA will be provided professional development and training opportunities. The successful VISTA applicant will join a passionate team of workforce development professionals who are committed to developing effective policy, and to promoting the AJC network as the go-to resource for local business and individual employment assistance.
