Description

Do you have a love of tinkering with toys, or a knack for working with computers? Join the Assistive Technology Clinic to create innovative technology-based solutions to help children and adults with disabilities maximize their independence and ability to perform tasks. Volunteers will use their passion for technology to:

  • Work with communication tools and devices
  • Modify toys to be more accessible for individuals with mobility limitations
  • Assist in maintaining and updating the Lending Toy Library Database
  • Develop Augmentative & Alternative Communication (AAC) device pages
  • Film and create informational or training videos about AAC devices
  • Build, repair, and adapt customized key guards, lap trays, or device and cup holders


Benefits of Position: Volunteers will be part of a creative team to help an individual with a disability access communication, mobility, independent living, and recreational skills. Depending on the project, volunteers will develop skills in soldering, programming communication devices, AAC communication and accessibility strategies, in addition to iOS and AV technology applications. 


Time Commitment: Volunteers are expected to commit to a minimum of 3 months of volunteering, for at least 1 hour a week.


Qualifications: Volunteers must:

  • Attend a volunteer orientation
  • Successfully complete a background check
  • Have a passion for technology, and an ability to think creatively

Depending on the project, volunteers may need:

  • Basic engineering, mechanical, or construction skills
  • Experience in working with electrical appliances and soldering
  • Familiarity with PowerPoint or iOS
