ABOUT ADVOCATES ABROAD

Advocates Abroad is a non-profit organization that provides pro bono legal assistance to refugees and asylum-seekers in Greece. Advocates in the field operate in and around detention centers and refugee camps throughout the Greek islands and mainland. Field teams are supported by a remote team and research team. Our mission is to provide legal aid to every refugee and asylum seeker in need, without discrimination or compensation. For more information regarding Advocates Abroad and our partners, please visit our website at www.advocatesabroad.org.

POSITION OVERVIEW

Advocates Abroad is accepting applications on an ongoing basis for volunteers to join our Field Team, Remote Team and Research Team. Field Team volunteers join us on short and long term field missions to provide legal and non-legal aid to refugees and asylum seekers on the ground in Greece. Qualified attorneys and asylum experts are encouraged to apply.

QUALIFICATIONS: Familiarity with the Greek or other EU asylum system.  Prior experience in aid work or crisis management is an asset.  Attorneys should be qualified to provide legal advice. Most importantly, every applicant must be motivated and resilient.

PLACEMENT: Volunteers may be based on the islands or mainland, based on both volunteer preference and ongoing field need. Missions are physically and emotionally exhausting. Please be prepared to operate nonetheless.

DURATION: A field mission is a minimum of two weeks. Long term volunteers are particularly encouraged to apply. Repeat Advocates always welcome.

LOGISTICS: The volunteer is responsible for arranging and covering all costs for their accommodations and travel to and from Greece. Advocates Abroad may be able to reimburse certain field expenses within Greece.

PRE-DEPLOYMENT TRAINING: In-depth, challenging legal and non-legal training sessions on the current field situation and Greek asylum procedures are mandatory for all field positions. Training sessions and related materials shall be provided, and are expected to be studied thoroughly prior to commencement of volunteer activities and arrival in Greece. Please ensure at least 3 weeks between applying and desired deployment.
