MEXICO: Remote Medical Projects in Rural Communities

We’re looking to volunteers to assist with a range of medical projects and initiatives in remote environments around Campeche, Mexico.

Working from the Ninth Wave base in the city of Campeche, groups of volunteers accompanied by our staff medic will continue development and implementation of a programme of drop-in clinics in remote communities surrounding Campeche. You’ll work on diagnosis, treatment and general education and advice, hosting first-aid workshops within the community and participating in educational exchanges with the opportunity to learn about traditional Mayan medicine.

In the city, experienced medics will be able to work with the Red Cross and the local ambulance service, gaining experience of working in emergency medicine within the context of Mexico. All volunteers will assist with preparing wilderness medical kits and procedures for exploratory journeys on the Usumacinta river (these journeys are also available for volunteers to participate in during the months of January, April and November) and with the delivery of educational workshops in the city.

Placements will be individually tailored according to interests and existing experience in order to enable wide-ranging skill development and community engagement. Working as part of the team in Campeche, volunteers will be getting involved with any and all local projects, including a weekly green market, regular cultural events, educational programmes and an urban farming co-operative.

This programme includes:

— Accommodation in a shared space with other international volunteers and staff

— One meal per day, five days per week

— Transport to communities, on regular excursions and, wherever relevant, guides and language support to achieve the full potential of these activities

— Two Spanish lessons per week

All backgrounds and experience levels are welcome to get in touch. Time frames are flexible, with placements available from 4 weeks up to 3 months.
