Join the intensive effort to curb the spread of AIDS and help HIV-positive families in this West African nation that relies on community based organizations for prevention and treatment programs. These local groups have made colossal strides in advocacy, peer education, distribution of educational materials and improvement of access to experimental drug trials and health care. Still, the effect of the AIDS epidemic -- an estimated 350,000 people in Ghana were living with HIV or AIDS in 2003 -- are still felt in all levels of society, with the greatest impact faced by families of people living with HIV. You can make a difference by voluneering with one of the community based organizations that offer desperately needed services to affected families, ranging from education and counseling, to treatment programs and orphanages housing AIDS orphans. As you work, you'll gain an invaluable insight into Ghana's health care systems and the public health challenges in West Africa.
Project Duration: This program can last any length of time from two weeks to six months. The typical duration is 6 to 8 weeks.
The volunteer placements are in both rural and urban areas throughout Ghana. Each volunteer is matched with a placement on an individual basis depending on what the volunteer is looking for and the needs of the organizations. Participants live with local hosts families and receive breakfast and dinner each day with their hosts.
Participants must be at least 18 years old or older at the time of their program.
