Grant Writer for LGBTQ-Inclusive Education

Hope in a Box is an early-stage nonprofit that works with rural public schools to ensure LGBTQ students feel safe, welcome, and included. We believe literature has a unique ability to cultivate empathy and dispel stereotypes, so we send educators and librarians “Hope in a Box:” curated literature featuring LGBTQ protagonists, bespoke curricula for these materials, and coaching on LGBTQ themes and terminology.

We are seeking an experienced grant writer to research and apply for grants to help scale our program. This volunteer role will begin this summer and work with our team for 3-6 months (with opportunity to extend). Responsibilities include:

(+) Prospecting potential funders, including foundations, corporate programs, and private philanthropies interested in LGBTQ advocacy, education, youth anti-bullying, and mental wellness

(+) Refining our standard grant application template and materials

(+) Applying for 2-4 high-potential funding opportunities per quarter

We anticipate this role will require 2-4 hours of time per week, though this commitment can vary depending on the interest and experience of the candidate. The grant writer will work with the Program Director and the Executive Director.

Qualifications:

(+) Ability to dedicate 2-4 hours of volunteer time per week for 3-6 months (flexible schedule), starting Summer 2020

(+) Experience researching grant and funding opportunities

(+) Experience managing the grant application process from start to finish

(+) Experience writing successful grant applications for nonprofit organizations

(+) Excellent written and verbal communication skills

(+) Ability to collaborate and incorporate feedback

(+) Self-starter who can drive a project remotely

(+) Passion for education and LGBTQ issues
