SOAR Immigration Legal Services, a program of Ecumenical Ministries of Oregon, is seeking a volunteer Citizenship ESOL (English for Speakers of Other Languages) Instructor to help adult immigrants and refugees in our community build the skills, knowledge, and confidence necessary to gain U.S. citizenship! Our Citizenship classes are designed to prepare learners for the U.S. Citizenship test, which includes an evaluation of speaking, reading, and writing abilities in English, as well as questions about U.S. history and civics. Classes meet every Sunday afternoon at 3:00 to 6:00 PM from May 13 to August 12, 2018 at the library in downtown Hood River. As a volunteer, you will support language development for non-native English speakers, learn and facilitate learning about the components of the USCIS naturalization interview and exam, help others and make connections to the community, and gain teaching experience. Training, lesson plans, textbooks, and additional learning materials are provided. Adult education and English teaching experience preferred. No foreign language skills necessary- just bring your enthusiasm, patience, and commitment to the full class session. A substitute teacher is available as needed.
