The National Foster Youth Institute (NFYI) is seeking volunteers who are passionate about child welfare and about working in the Mental Health Care field. As a Mental Health Volunteer, you will work on a dynamic team during the course of NFYI’s annual Shadow Day program. Shadow Day is an opportunity for young adults (18-30) with personal experience in the foster care system to share their stories and policy recommendations with Members of Congress. All Shadow Day participants undergo a week of workshops and activities to prepare for spending a day with their Congressional representative.

This short-term volunteer position has the primary goal of supporting NFYI Shadow Day participants’ mental health and well-being during the course of the program. In addition to assisting NFYI staff and Shadow Day participants logistically and emotionally, volunteers will help maintain “Zen Den” rooms. The Zen Dens are safe spaces in which participants can practice self-care, relax, and seek further support and help for any difficulties during the Shadow Day program. The Specialist volunteer position takes place from May 31st to June 6th, and volunteers will have rotating shifts throughout that time. May 31st and June 1st will each include training for the position. Following the trainings, Specialist volunteers will be given daily schedules, each not surpassing 8 hours each day. 

Responsibilities and Duties: Mental Health Volunteers are responsible for attending and actively participating in assigned volunteer shifts. Volunteers are also responsible for notifying staff or appropriate authorities if any participants who are having difficulties during the Shadow Day program and who may be at risk for harming themselves or others. Volunteer duties will include:

● Opening, maintaining and closing the Zen Den spaces 

● Leading individual and group debriefing activities and conversations 

● Mediating conflicts between individuals 

● Assist NFYI staff with Shadow Day workshops and activities

● Provide emotional support through active listening and relationship-building 

● Assess when participants may need more intensive support and/or crisis interventions 

● Maintaining confidentiality except when suspect harm to self, harm to others, and/or child/elder abuse/neglect

Qualifications and Skills: Some college experience, Associates and Bachelors degrees preferred. And/or experience in a following or related field of psychology, social work, sociology, nursing, public health, and/or education. 

● Good problem-solving abilities 

● Strong and clear communication skills

● Comfortable with mediating and resolving conflicts 

● Empathetic

● Can work both independently and in a team  

● Ability to work through crises and notify others, when necessary

● Assess psychological stability and well-being
