Description

This is a revised posting and it supersedes the earlier version that was advertised from March 17, 2018 to April 8, 2018 for a Legal Research Intern.

For over 40 years, the National Coalition Against Censorship (NCAC), a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization, has advanced its mission to promote freedom of thought, inquiry and expression and oppose censorship in all its forms.

Our alliance of more than 50 national non-profits, including literary, artistic, religious, educational, professional, labor, and civil liberties groups, engages in direct advocacy and education to support First Amendment principles.

NCAC’s Youth Free Expression Program is looking for a full-time summer volunteer to assist with legal research and writing and contribute to NCAC’s reporting on important legislative and policy developments pertaining to freedom of expression. This is an opportunity to explore the broad and dynamic field of First Amendment law while developing resource materials that free speech defenders can rely on.

The ideal candidate is a law student with access to an online legal research database and a demonstrated interest in free expression and/or education. A minimum commitment of 10 weeks is required. This is an unpaid position that may satisfy the eligibility requirements for law-related Pro Bono work as defined by the New York State Court of Appeals Rules for the Admissions of Attorneys and Counselors at Law Rule §520.16.

The primary tasks will include:

 Research and drafting of case law summaries for online resource on First Amendment in Schools

 Research and updating of resources on social media and online speech

 Tracking and reporting on developments in First Amendment legislation and jurisprudence

 Publishing blog posts on the NCAC website
