New Jersey Youth Challenge Academy Information
Mission: The mission of the NJ Youth Challenge Academy is to provide a highly disciplined environment fostering academics, leadership development, physical training, and personal growth to educate and train unemployed youth who have ceased to attend high school.
Program: The National Guard Youth Program is a 17 ½ month program that leads, trains, and mentors at-risk youth so that they may become productive citizens in America’s future.
Mentoring is a critical component towards positive youth outcomes. The act of mentoring is a series of ongoing and little successes. Real impact is made through consistent and ongoing relationship building.
The goal of the mentor program is to help Academy youth gain the skills and confidence to deal with life situations and be able and responsible to make good choices in the future.
Becoming a Mentor
Success is a team effort. We are seeking caring, responsible adults who will help guide, motivate, and support a cadet within the program and beyond.
A mentor makes a 17 month commitment to a cadet. Through a friendly match process, a mentor is paired with a cadet to serve as a positive role model and friend. Mentors pledge to maintain on-going contact with his or her cadet: letters, e-mails, phone calls, and visitation.
After attending a required orientation, mentors will be equipped with the skills to provide guidance, give input, evaluate changes, and provide encouragement necessary to help at-risk youth set life goals and plan for a positive future.
