All Hands and Hearts - Smart Response
6 County Road, Suite 6,
On September 7, 2017, one of the most lethal earthquakes in Mexican history, a devastating 8.2 magnitude quake hit close to the southern state of Chiapas. Just 12 days later and a few hundred miles away, a 7.1 magnitude quake rocked central Mexico, toppling buildings, breaking gas mains, knocking out electricity and sparking fires across the city and other towns in central Mexico.
All Hands and Hearts identified one of the hardest hit communities, the small village of El Jicarero. Our team is on the ground and partnering with Happy Hearts Fund Mexico to reconstruct the Narciso Mendoza Primary school, which will include 6 new classrooms, WaSH facilities, a multi-purpose room and a computer lab, alongside landscaping and fencing for the school. The new classrooms will enable 151 current students and 400+ projected students over the next 10 years to move out of their temporary classrooms and back to school. This will be our tenth disaster resilient school rebuilt in Mexico.
In addition to working in this area, we have identified a great need in a small village called ‘Nicolás Bravo’, in the state of Morelos, Mexico. Here, the earthquake created significant structural damage to the Vicente Guerrero Primary School. We will work to retrofit 6 classrooms, a computer lab and the library. Additionally, we will repair their WaSH facilities, perform electrical installations and rebuild the perimeter wall. Once complete, this school will enable 176 students to return to a safe and disaster-resilient learning environment.
