Horn of Africa Services is looking for a volunteer with a passion for the arts to lead a 30 minute arts activity once per week at our New Holly After School Program.

Our program assists students in grades 1 through 8 in improving their academic skills, and we support low-income immigrant and refugee families in helping their children succeed in school.

Not only will you get the opportunity to mentor students, and be a role model, you will also have the opportunity to work in multi-lingual, multi-cultural nonprofit organization offering support and advocacy services to East African refugees and immigrants. We tutor at the New Holly Neighborhood Campus, in a low-income housing site in South Seattle.

You will work with a team of parents and tutors to lead students students in group art project once per week. Your goals and responsibilities will be to:

  • Lead a weekly 30 minute art activity
  • Mentor and empower students through art

Through collaborating with East African tutors, parents, and students, you will have the opportunity to experience and learn about East African cultures, refugee issues, and tutoring best practices. To make the most of this expeirence both for the students you will serve and for yourself, your commitment and enthusiasm will be essential.

The After School Program at New Holly runs from 4:30-6:00 PM, Mondays through Thursdays in line with the Seattle Public Schools academic calendar. Art activities will take place from 5:30pm-6pm, once a week based on your schedule. You are more than welcome to attend more often if you'd like, and we encourage our volunteers to stay longer in order to build meaningful relationships with the youth we serve.
