Under supervision of the Program Manager, the Research Assistant will be responsible for the following:

Research and writing on sustainability topics:

  • Literature review
  • Interviews
  • Data Analysis
  • Proofreading

Other opportunities include:

  • Graphic design
  • Website design

Work may be completed remotely and hours are flexible. This is an unpaid volunteer position, training is provided.

Background on Sustainable San Mateo County:

Established in 1992, Sustainable San Mateo County's mission is to encourage community action on issues relating to sustainability by providing accurate, timely, and empowering information. Research topics include:

·     Climate Disruption & Adaption

·     Education & Workforce Development

·     Resource & Habitat Conservation

·     Efficient Transportation

·     Community Health & Wellness

·     Jobs/Housing Balance

Orientation, Supervision, and Evaluation:

SSMC is a small organization with an Executive Director, a contract Indicators Program Manager, and many engaged volunteers (including board members and students). Orientation, supervision, and evaluation will be led by the Program Manager. Tasks will be assigned based on volunteer interests and goals, and SSMC projects and priorities. Course credit may be available to students and should be arranged on a case-by-case basis.

Knowledge and Skills Developed:

Understand root causes and inter-relational nature of social problems; learn how citizen groups have and can effect change in their communities; develop research, communication, advocacy, and/or problem-solving skills; determine how to apply one's professional skills to the betterment of society; engage, motivate and inspire others.

  • Experience or background in San Mateo County ideal but not required
