Water & Health For All (WHA) is a community non-profit organization fighting preventable water-borne disease in Gulu District, Uganda through sustainable water, sanitation, and hygiene (WASH) interventions. Water-related diseases such as dysentery, typhoid, and cholera, as well as malnutrition caused by chronic gut infections, cause more than 1 million premature deaths worldwide each year. WHA conducts data-informed, evidence-based interventions in partnership with the local community and municipal authorities to fight these diseases by catalyzing sustained improvements in communal water source governance, drinking water quality and supply, sanitation adoption, and hygiene practices. WHA is a fiscally-sponsored project of the 501(c)3 registered Joy To The World Foundation.


POSITION DESCRIPTION:


The Executive Director (ED) serves as a guiding force, chief administrator, strategist, and spokesperson for Water & Health for All. The ideal candidate will be passionate about global health and dedicated to improving population health in northern Uganda through high-quality water, sanitation, & hygiene interventions and research. As the public face of WHA, the Executive Director will help grow the organization’s resources and develop a stronger network of business, nonprofit, and academic partners. He/she will articulate a vision for WHA’s role in a competitive NGO environment to stakeholders including foundations, individual donors, and partner organizations. As the chief administrator and strategist of WHA, the Executive Director will work closely with WHA’s Board of Directors to define strategic priorities and develop program budgets, and will guide local staff in executing projects. Candidates should be able to think critically about program design and implementation. The Executive Director can be based in any location worldwide. She/he will receive extensive mentorship, training, and support from the outgoing executive director as needed. This position offers a dynamic opportunity to help lead live-saving social change in vulnerable communities. KEY NOTE: This role could develop into a paid position after 1-2 months if the candidate demonstrates strong performance and a desire for an expanded role.


RESPONSIBILITIES:


1) Lead Fundraising Strategy & Campaigns (40% of time):


●     Identify funding opportunities, draft grants, and liaise with governmental agencies, foundations, corporations, and individual philanthropists

●    Lead the planning and implementation of grass-roots fundraising campaigns

●     Develop partnerships for shared resources in the form of in-kind donations and expertise


2) Oversee Administrative Functions (30% of time):


●     Collaborate with WHA’s Board of Directors and local staff to develop program budgets

●     Guide and support local staff in executing programs

●     Maintain regular communication with WHA’s stakeholders, including staff, Advisory Board, major donors, and the press

●     Ensure organizational compliance with legal and reporting requirements in the USA and Uganda


3) Lead Strategic Planning (20% of time):


●     Work with the Board of Directors and Ugandan Staff on strategic planning for both short and long term time horizons

●     Monitor impact of current programs and manage reporting and evaluation systems

●     Identify new program opportunities to deliver key benefits in line with WHA’s mission


4) Build WHA’s Brand (10% of time):


●     Represent WHA at public events in the USA and Uganda

●     Work with volunteers to develop a robust digital and traditional media presence

●     Identify and develop opportunities to collaborate with companies, non-profit networks, and institutions of higher education



QUALIFICATIONS:


Basic:

●     Passion for global health and international development

●     Ability to commit 10-20 hours per week as a volunteer (KEY NOTE: Role could develop into a paid position after 1-2 months if candidate demonstrates strong performance and a desire for an expanded role)

●     B.A. or equivalent experience in a relevant field (public health, business administration, nonprofit management, international development, environmental engineering, environmental science)

●     Strong project management and organizational ability

●     Ability and enthusiasm to raise funds for WHA programs

●     Skills to conduct financial oversight and planning

●     Experience working in a developing country

●     Strong work ethic

●     Humility to listen to local staff and community perspectives, to question one’s assumptions, and to appreciate the limits of development aid as well as the inherent complexities of international development


Ideal:

●     Master’s degree or higher in related field (public health, business or nonprofit management, international development, environmental engineering, environmental science, etc.)

●     2+ years of professional experience in related field (public health, business or nonprofit management, international development, environmental engineering, environmental science, etc.)

●     Experience managing and/or creating multi-stakeholder projects and programs

●     Superb verbal and excellent written communication skills and confidence communicating to a wide variety of audiences

●     Experience in fundraising, including individual donor cultivation and securing grant funding from corporations, foundations, governments, etc.

●     Demonstrated management skills and ability to delegate, with a dedication to mentorship and leading by example

●     Experience engaging with a wide range of organizational stakeholders, such as community partners, program beneficiaries, donors, staff, and government actors

●     Experience collaborating remotely with staff and/or volunteers

●     Residency in the Greater Boston Area
