Description

Interested in history and sharing one of Portland's premier attractions? Pittock Mansion is seeking enthusiastic volunteers to engage visitors in hands-on learning. Long-and-short-term volunteers are welcome to apply.

Hands-On History Host Description: The Hands-On History host uses the Artifact Carts to engage visitors in hands-on learning. The Artifact Carts consider of historic objects that visitors can pick up and use. The host helps guests learn about the objects and what life was like around the time Henry and Georgiana lived in the Mansion. Each shift, the Hands-On History host chooses which Artifact Cart they’d like to share with visitors, "Home Technology and Architecture" or "Kitchen Gadgets and Gizmos."

Impact: The Hands-On History host actively support the Mansion's mission to inspire understanding and stewardship to Portland history through Pittock Mansion, its collections, and programs.

Training: All volunteers are required to attend a 2-hour training, complete an application, and submit a background check consent form. During the training, Hands-On History hosts receive the Guide’s Guide, Gate Lodge Families, and the Hands-On History Guides for each cart to study and learn. This training emphasizes information in the Hands-On History Guides, and covers the objects on each cart.

Commitment: We ask volunteers to arrive between 10am-12pm and stay for 4-hours. Shifts are available 7-days a week, February-December. There isn't a maximum or minimum numbers of shifts a volunteers must sign up for--schedules are flexible.

How to apply: Please contact Kyla Foster at kfoster@pittockmansion.org or 503-823-3587.

Please note: Hosting the Artifact Carts is the least physically demanding volunteer position as volunteers are welcome to sit or stand in one place for the duration of their shift. Hosting the Artifact Carts provides an opportunity to engage with visitors at greater length than guiding tours.
