Description

School in the Park Volunteer

Do you enjoy working with students and would like to share your love for museums with them?

This winter, we are hosting eight classes of 6th graders here at the San Diego Museum of Man as part of School in the Park. Our educators are excited to share their programming focused on race, equity, and social justice with you. Through the program’s coursework, staff and volunteers will lead the students in thoughtful discussions on what it means to be an “upstander” and how we can begin to create more good in the world. We would love for you to join us in guiding the students through this compelling topic by assisting our educators in this program.

*On Thursdays, the program takes place at Wilson Middle School from 8:15am-12:00pm. We’d welcome a volunteer, too, if available, but it is not necessary.

We are looking for two volunteers every morning, and two volunteers every afternoon. If possible, we’d prefer if someone can stay for the same shift either the whole week (e.g. every morning from January 22-26) or on the same day but for all four weeks (e.g. every Monday morning for each week’s session). Continuity is important when working with our students as it helps to build trust.

Depending on need, there is possibility to help with the Spring sessions of School in the Park as well, which will focus on Ancient Egypt and Kumeyaay.

Position entails the following:

  • Training two weeks before program starts, with a short meeting the week prior. Training will cover curriculum, class management, and practice sessions.
  • Volunteers will not be the lead teacher but rather assist educators in various activities and discussions, and will help students converse, dive deeper, find answers, and explore gallery spaces.
  • Volunteers will help with student movement throughout the museum (to include restroom breaks) and will assist with keeping students on task.
  • Volunteers will help with setup and cleanup of classroom and gallery spaces.

Volunteers must have some experience working and learning with middle school students (but not necessarily teaching), be reliable and self-aware, be open to talking about race and how it influences their life, have good interpersonal skills, and be willing to be vulnerable.

To apply, please send your resume and a brief letter of interest to volunteers@museumofman.org. In your letter, please indicate your availability for the dates listed above.
