Description

The Anti-Hunger and Opportunity Corps (AHOC) is an AmeriCorps VISTA project, sponsored by the USDA Food and Nutrition Service, the Corporation for National and Community Service, and the Walmart Foundation, and managed by the New York City Coalition Against Hunger. Participants in AHOC work in both rural and urban areas across the country as part of a public-private partnership to improve access to nutrition assistance programs for Americans in need.

Open Arms of Minnesota (OAM) is a nonprofit that prepares and delivers healthy, nutritious food to people living with cancer, HIV/AIDS, multiple sclerosis, and ALS (Lou Gehrig’s disease). Our mission is to nourish mind, body and soul. We use fresh and, whenever possible, organic ingredients, including produce from our own garden. Each summer, we partner with two neighborhood centers to provide meals for neighborhood kids.

Open Arms of Minnesota, in partnership on the AHOC AmeriCorps VISTA program, is seeking two qualified candidates to:

  • Assist in the implementation and quality of, and access to, the Summer Food Service Program.
  • Work with two neighborhood sites to deliver and distribute meals to neighborhood children. Support site staff in maintaining records, fulfilling program requirements, and ensuring food safety
  • Maintain administrative records, including meal counts, food production records, and recipes
  • Support the kitchen in food prep
  • Publicize the program in the neighborhood and conduct ongoing outreach
  • Assist with the implementation of our weekly meal delivery program, approximately five hours per week. Responsibilities may include packaging and preparing food, greeting volunteers, delivery, and other responsibilities as need.

Requirements:

The ideal candidate will be outgoing, organized, and passionate about food justice.

  • A valid driver’s license
  • Strong organizational skills and familiarity with Microsoft Word and Excel
  • Excellent communication skills, a warm and professional presence, and an ability to work with neighborhood children, volunteers, site staff, and kitchen staff
  • The ability to drive a 15-passenger van, lift approximately 50 pounds, and navigate stairs

Time commitment:

This is a short-term, full-time position beginning May 2016 and lasting through mid-August 2016. You are expected to be available for the needs of your community and project at all times, including days, nights and weekends. Because AmeriCorps VISTA service requires a full immersion in the project and community, both full and part-time employment are strictly prohibited - no exceptions – as well as adhere to some political and religious constraints.
