The AmeriCorps Supplementary Intervention Specialist provides additional support in the after school program setting to enhance the K-5 student’s ability to read, write, speak, and listen in English which allows them to meaningfully access the Bilingual instruction program at school.
The Supplementary Intervention Specialist works with 1 to 8 students per day over the course of each year via push-in interventions 1:1 or in small groups no larger than 8 at a time. This Member has a specific interest in teaching that impacts the lives of recent immigrants and/or refugees applying concepts of service learning and acculturation to maximize the learning experience of the students being served.
AmeriCorps Member Supplementary Intervention Specialists serve a minimum of 900 hours during a 10 month term of service from September 1, 2020 to June 30, 2021. This Member serves an average of 25 hours per week which includes training, service hours and professional development.
Serves within Sewa’s after school program which caters to children from grades K-5 (ages 5-11) five hours/day, five days/week.
Engages with up to 15 students per day either 1:1 via a push-in intervention or in small groups of up to eight. Provides supplementary instruction in English or Spanish for bilingual and/or ESL program students needing intervention.
Meets with Lead Education Coordinators to plan and implement supplementary interventions.
Informs Lead Education Coordinators of students’ progress and needs in supplementary interventions.
Helps students complete homework and other after school activities successfully.
Maintains complete and accurate records of student’s progress.
Fosters a nurturing, supportive, and positive learning environment to encourage language development, enhance motivation, and clearly communicate center routines and expectations.
Leads students in two community service programs throughout the year.
Works with EC’s on showcase activities for parents.
Works with Community Liaisons to provide feedback on children that may support work with the families.
Supports other after school program events, as long as these activities are within the AmeriCorps guidelines and do not take away time from the essential functions of the Member service position.
Members may be required to perform other position-related instructions within the scope of their normal service activities, as requested by their Supervisor, in alignment with the terms and conditions of the AmeriCorps grant, and subject to reasonable accommodation.
Members are expected to interface professionally, ethically, cooperatively, productively and effectively with the Youth Services Coordinator, Lead Education Coordinator, Community Liaison where they serve, as well as with the students with whom they are engaged.

A commitment to humanitarian issues, equal access to opportunity, and building resilient, welcoming communities.
Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university, or ongoing studies and comparable work experience in that can be applied to the requirements of this position.
Service takes place at ASPIRE Center and may include home visits.
Must be a U.S. Citizen or be a permanent resident.
Enrollment in the program is contingent on the results of a National Service Criminal History Check that includes FBI fingerprinting and national record check, National Sex Offender Registry, and state criminal background check.
Physical demands are similar to those of a school teacher.
Professionalism, patience and forbearance are required because members must work with people of diverse backgrounds and perspectives, supporting children with both academic and social challenges.
The intellectual demands include capacity for research, knowledge of the material, and an ability to assess needs and determine the necessary response.

The position has recurring access to vulnerable populations.
The Member is required to wear appropriate attire including the AmeriCorps Logo at all times during service hours.
Disasters such as hurricanes, floods, epidemics or other emergencies may necessitate service be provided remotely or virtually using cellular or internet platforms.
In the event of a local, state, or federal disaster declaration, AmeriCorps members may be asked on a volunteer basis or be required by OneStar to activate to assist in disaster response and recovery activities within their communities. This may involve virtual service opportunities or in-person service opportunities. This may include service opportunities outside of the member’s standard service hours or in place of their standard service duties. In the event of a large-scale, high needs local, state, or federal disaster, AmeriCorps members may voluntarily or be required by OneStar to deploy to an area outside of their service area to assist in disaster response and recovery activities.
