Description

Who are SKIP?

Since 2003, SKIP has been working with disadvantaged families in an impoverished district of the city of Trujillo, Peru. Our holistic programme focuses on the educational, economic, emotional and social development of each child and family. It is our aim to foster the capacity of children and families to be the principal agents of change in their own lives.

Volunteer and Learn Spanish Programme

If you are looking for an alternative kind of intensive Spanish course, then look no further than our Volunteer and Learn Spanish Programme. We offer professional Spanish classes for people who are committed to working hard and learning the Spanish language. We are also able to work with Universities to provide internships and elective options for Univeristy courses.

Spanish Language Lessons:

SKIP has teamed up with UK Vivential, a language school in Trujillo,to be able to offer the opportunity to undertake an intensive Spanish course while volunteering at SKIP teaching English. Study and learn Spanish in Peru while you volunteer!!

Participants will study Spanish for 5 hours per week, in a professional setting and with a curriculum that has been designed to compliment the Spanish immersion experience where you are using the vocabulary and other skills you learn, on a daily basis. At the current time, lessons will be at a basic beginner to lower intermediate leveland will progress over time.

This approach will help you to learn to speak Spanish more quickly as you will volunteer in a Spanish speaking environment.

Volunteering:

Participants will then be able to further develop the Spanish language skills they are learning by volunteering at SKIP for around 25 hours per week, this will include time for lesson planning. Due to language constraints, most volunteers will volunteer in the English teaching programme, but we can be flexible if people are interested in supporting other programme activities, depending on language constraints. Art and sports teaching could be possible amongst other things, see our website for more information about the project www.skipperu.org

Those who have not taught before should not worry, our English teaching programme uses a fully structured curriculum and is supervised by a qualified and experienced EFL teacher who will provide relevant training to help you develop teaching techniques. You will also co-teach lessons and so will not be alone in the classroom.

Depending on your interests and vacancies, you can also volunteer teaching sports or arts and help in the library.

Free Time:

We do work hard at SKIP and applicants should be ready to apply themselves fully to their volunteer positions as do the other 25+ international volunteers. That said, there is time at evenings and weekends to relax, experience a bit of Latin America and visit local attractions such as Chan Chan, La Huaca de la Luna(The Temple of the Moon) and the beach at Huanchaco, which is renowned for having excellent waves to learn to surf and even hosts the annual long board world championship.

Programme Detail:

  • Spanish course: 5hours of Spanish learning classes per week (usually one to one sessions)
  • 25 hours (approx) volunteering in SKIP (including lesson planning time)
  • Accommodation in the main volunteer house, or with a host family as preferred.

  • Minimum commitment of six weeks

Why SKIP is different - Many programmes offer English teaching volunteer opportunities, we feel that the important difference in SKIP is that we recognise that speaking English is NOT the same as teaching English!! For this reason we provide as much support to our volunteers as possible so that you are quickly trained and able to provide quality lessons for the children. We hugely welcome volunteers who have more experience in teaching as then we are able to pair you with less experienced volunteer teachers and maximise the learning experience for everyone involved. You can read bios for all our permanent team on the website.

Costs:

Volunteers need to cover the cost of their Spanish lessons 24 soles/$8 per hour long lesson and the regular SKIP donation.
