Gifford Cat Shelter is the oldest no-kill cat shelter in the country. Located in Brighton near Boston College and very close to the Green line BC stop, Gifford has humanely cared for and adopted out thousands of cats. Gifford is a well regarded shelter with a proud legacy and a philosophy of caring for each cat as if they were our own. With a small but dedicated staff, the shelter relies on a community of volunteers to maintain the shelter, spend time with the cats and assist with adoptions and administrative duties.

We are currently seeking additional volunteers, mainly to help with core shelter work consisting of cleaning the cat enclosures and general shelter space, feeding the cats and performing other duties as needed, under the direction of a staff member or experienced volunteer. We are seeking minimum commitments of six months, at two hours per week. Most needed at the current time are weekday volunteers for the 8:00 a.m. - 10:00 a.m. shifts, but volunteers available at other times are also desired.

If you love animals and are seeking a meaningful volunteer opportunity, where you can spend time with nice people and lots of great cats, and add a lot of value in just a few hours per week, we'd love to hear from you. Please contact us at to express interest.
