Child Advocate

A CASA volunteer, involved in a D&N case, is appointed by the judge and assigned by our Program Coordinator to work with a child in need of support.

The main responsibility of this volunteer is to get to know the child and their life situation, the child’s desires and needs. As a volunteer you then become the voice of that child in court by recommending services and support to help the child develop a path toward a successful future. In Dependency and Neglect Cases, the family is in court due to their actions and the risk it presents to the well-being of the child. In some instances, the child may be removed from the home, or may have limited visitation with one or more parent. The advocate will meet with the child and the parent(s)/caregiver to gain knowledge of the child and their life situation. The CASA volunteer submit reports to the judge, attends court and speaks, on behalf of the child, for their best interests to be in a safe and permanent home.

The expectation is 15 or more hours per month at first, and then will die down as the case moves forward. Volunteers complete 30 hours of training and are sworn in by a judge. During the training they have the opportunity to observe court hearings. Once sworn in a volunteer may shadow a case assigned to an experienced volunteer until they receive a case of their own. For the first six months of their own case, they will have an experienced volunteer mentor to work with. Throughout the case, they receive mentoring and support from the Program Coordinator.
