Contract: Voluntary agreement

Job Ref: VA83

Since 1985 Freedom from Torture has been the only UK human rights organization dedicated to treating and supporting torture survivors who seek refuge in the UK. We do this primarily through psychological therapies but also services which document torture forensically, practical legal and welfare support and creative groups.

Thanks to the dedication of our staff and volunteers – as well as thousands of passionate supporters and funders – thousands of torture survivors have been able to rebuild their lives in incredibly difficult circumstances.

The purpose of the role is to provide welfare advice and assistance to clients at Freedom from Torture. This will include but is not limited to offering advice and support to clients on asylum support, housing, transition following a grant of status, welfare benefits, health access, destitution and other welfare related matters, including advising clients on their rights and entitlements in these areas. In return we offer a comprehensive training and induction programme with ongoing support and supervision throughout the placement. All reasonable travel and lunch expenses will be paid.

This is a new role within a busy and dynamic team and will suit an individual who enjoys using initiative and problem solving skills in an interdisciplinary environment. We intend the role to be varied and will seek to support development and learning.

The ideal candidate for the role will have the following skills:

• Experience providing advice in relation to welfare rights and entitlements or other experience of working in an advice setting.

• Excellent skills in prioritising tasks, managing a heavy work load, monitoring progress and meeting targets and deadlines.
