About Girls' LEAP

Girls' LEAP is a youth-serving nonprofit with 20 years of experience helping girls and young women in Greater Boston develop the tools and skills to keep themselves safe, both emotionally and physically.

We disrupt the cycle of violence against women and girls by teaching girls they have a right to be safe, and how to defend themselves if necessary through social-emotional skill building activities and discussions, coupled with basic physical self-defense. Our signature Lifetime Empowerment and Awareness Program (LEAP), empowers 350+ girls, young women, and adult women annually, visiting local schools, community centers, and youth-serving institutions to offer the program.

About the Volunteer Position

Teaching Women are a critical part of our inter-generational teaching teams. Under the supervision a Lead Teacher, and alongside teen staff (ages 14-18,) Teaching Women lead small groups in discussions and activities on subjects such as setting effective boundaries, finding supportive adults, courage, health and unhealthy relationships, and more.

Teaching Women may also assist with demonstrating and supporting students in learning basic physical self-defense. No prior experience in self defense is required: we will train you!

Teaching Women should be committed to positive youth development, fostering a culture of consent, eliminating gender stereotypes, and building self-esteem.

The Commitment

  • An 18 hour training offered June 21, 22, 23
  • 7 hours/week total from June 9 - August 8, 2019 (3 hours/day on Tuesdays and Thursdays + 1 hour scheduled for supervision and additional training.) We have a morning community program in Roxbury, and an afternoon community program in South Boston. All summer programs will run during business hours only.
  • Teaching Women also have the opportunity to organize and/or participate in community outreach and awareness events, attend staff-only trainings, and assist with out Teen Mentor Program.

University or college-based Teaching Women may be eligible for service-learning, practicum, or work-study credit. Please consult your academic advisers and LEAP's Program Director about this opportunity.

We encourage any college student or community member 18+ who identifies as a woman and is interested in empowerment, leadership, or self-defense to apply.
