- Volunteer Opportunity posted by Behind the Book
Volunteer with Behind the Book, a non-profit literacy organization that inspires New York City public school students to explore stories and empower their voices. Through our innovative programs, which are part of the class curricula, accomplished authors visit high-needs pre-K-12 classrooms to guide students in creating their own writing and art projects based on the theme of the author's book.
You need no experience or training to volunteer. As a writing, research or art coach, you'll support and encourage students as they work in the classroom.
This classroom workshop needs your help in Fort Greene, Brooklyn. To volunteer, reply with the program code and date to firstname.lastname@example.org. We'll supply the address, directions, and other information when you're confirmed:
Date: Friday, January 5th, 2018
Time: 9:00 - 10:30 AM
Volunteer Role: Research Coach
About the workshop: Fifth-graders read about the life of Jackie Robinson, and how he broke baseball’s color barrier, in 42 Is Not Just A Number: The Odyssey of Jackie Robinson, American Hero by Doreen Rappaport. They’ll learn how the celebrated baseball player launched a ripple of hope that led to larger civil rights changes. Research coaches will help students gather information on Jackie’s achievements, as well as other acts of resistance in American history, to prepare to write their own news articles.
