Description

St. Thomas University - Center for Community Engagement (FL|CC)

St. Thomas University (STU) is a small, Roman Catholic university located in Miami Gardens, FL. As part of its mission, St. Thomas works to provide a high-quality education to a largely under-served student population, while also engaging these students in the urgent social issues of their surrounding community. The Center for Community Engagement facilitates this work at St. Thomas University, locally, regionally and internationally. The St. Thomas University/Carol City Middle School Community Educational Partnership (STU/CCMS CEP) is a local initiative that leverages university teaching and research resources into Carol City Middle School – a local, low-performing middle school in Miami Gardens, FL. The VISTA member assigned to the Center for Community Engagement will work on the STU/CCMS initiative by building infrastructure for the partnership, developing mentoring programs, organizing university-wide service days (including MLK Day of Service), and supporting university faculty integrating their research/teaching into the school’s most critical needs.

Member Duties : The proposed STU/CCMS CEP VISTA member will be a key individual in building the foundation for this long-term partnership. Placed in the university’s Center for Community Engagement (CCE), the VISTA member will: A) Develop a system for data sharing during research projects aimed at identifying students at risk at Carol City Middle School (CCMS); B) Create an infrastructure to track graduate school counselling interns working at CCMS; C) Support community-based learning courses that pair courses in child-psychology with students most at risk at CCMS; D) Develop and coordinate a co-curricular volunteer/after-school mentoring program at CCMS; and E) Coordinate university-wide service days (including Make a Difference Day, MLK Day of Service, etc.), that will bring upwards of 200 STU students to CCMS several times per year to implement specific school improvement projects which build the school's capacity to address poverty related community needs.
