The United Nations Association of the United States of America (UNA-USA) is a membership organization dedicated to inform, inspire, and mobilize the American people to support the ideals and vital work of the United Nations. For 70 years, UNA-USA has worked to accomplish its mission through its national network of Chapters, youth engagement, advocacy efforts, education programs, and public events. UNA-USA is a program of the United Nations Foundation. UNA-USA and its sister organization the Better World Campaign represent the single largest network of advocates and supporters of the United Nations in the world.

We are dedicated to educating, inspiring and mobilizing Americans to support the principles and vital work of the United Nations, strengthening the United Nations system, promoting constructive United States leadership in that system and achieving the goals of the United Nations Charter.

The Role

UNA-USA chapters help expand UNA-USA’s work by forging partnerships with local businesses and nonprofits, sponsoring local education and advocacy programs. The Senior Vice President will be a founding officer and member of the Bronx UNA-USA Southern New York (SNY) Chapter. The Vice President of Memberships and Development, under the leadership of the President, will be responsible for developing a membership growth and retention strategy as well as providing general leadership for volunteer coordination services.

Board Member Responsibilities

The Chapter, as a group and as individuals, is not only expected to provide organizational governance, but to also take an active role with long-range strategic development initiatives. Chapter Officers must exercise a strong sense of professionalism, high moral standards and fiscal stewardship whilst maintaining the best interest of the UNA-USA. 

o  Understand and become acquainted with the UN Charter, UN governance structure and subcommittees, Universal Declaration of Human Rights and UNA-USA’s mission.

o  Willingness to engage in a succession plan inclusive of developing and testing standard operating procedures ensuring the continued success of the Chapter during periods of transition and growth. 

o  Make a moderately significant initial commitment of time for meetings, orientation and for periodic consultation with UNA associate members. Per week contribution after the chapter startup phase is approximately 5 hours per week.

o  Selected candidates must register to become a UNA-USA member within ten business days after being extended an offer to contribute in the volunteer V.P. of Memberships and Development capacity.

o  Attempt to recruit two UNA-USA members annually.

o  Commit to a two-year term, commencing as of the date of appointment. 

Programmatic Responsibilities

o  Develop membership and volunteer tracking mechanisms that allow for YOY reporting on per program unit volunteers, membership recruitment, volunteer-to-membership transitions, lapsed-to-active membership reinstatements, membership chapter transitions and advance notice of memberships pending renewal.

o  In collaboration with the Senior Vice President, identify and seek funding opportunities through collaboration with for-profit organizations, CBO’s, Non-governmental organizations (NGOs), secondary and post-secondary institutions, existing UN partnerships or through federal and/or state grant opportunities in support of all programmatic initiatives.

o  In collaboration with the V.P. of Communications, implement a “Volunteer Network Sharing” platform thereby ensuring consistent engagement opportunities for registered volunteers and providing neighboring UNA-USA chapters volunteer personnel as needed.

o  Design and implement a tiered-benefits package for volunteers and members by soliciting partnerships with local organizations.

o  Solicit volunteer feedback on past events, challenges and future program/event recommendations, by coordinating bi-monthly volunteer engagement sessions.

o  Solicit membership feedback on past events, challenges and future program/event recommendations, by coordinating bi-monthly membership engagement sessions.

The selected candidate will assist in the recruitment of additional volunteer personnel to assist with the research, identification and application of funding opportunities/partnership building.


The applicant must have superior writing and speaking skills, be comfortable supervising a team of volunteers, willing to invest a moderately significant amount of time to establish the framework of the subdivision, and become well acquainted with the UN structure, UN Charter and the UN Sustainable Development Knowledge Platform. A minimum of two-years serving in a development, marketing or commission-based sales capacity is preferred.
