About Glenwood Academy:

Founded in 1887 by Oscar L. Dudley and Robert Todd Lincoln, son of President Abraham Lincoln, the vision for Glenwood Academy was to turn "child-saving" into "person-building" by developing dependent children into self-sufficient adults who lived productive lives. Since then, Glenwood Academy has evolved into a comprehensive residential education program for boys and girls, focused on academic success.

We are proud to continue the mission of nurturing and educating good kids from challenging situations by inspiring excellence, building character, and strengthening community. Glenwood Academy’s services meet the needs of a very specific population - children whose future successes are threatened by their surroundings. Glenwood’s students come from high poverty communities. Many come to Glenwood during a crisis and are dealing with issues such as an illness, violence, desertion or drug abuse in their family. Many do not have strong role models that provide emotional support and foster self-esteem and academics.

As an accredited Sunday through Friday residential school, Glenwood Academy’s residential program is a family-like environment where children live in one of twelve cottages with their house parents and peers. Classes in grades 2 through 8 are offered at Glenwood, and students in grades 9 through 12 attend one of three local college prep high schools. In addition to school, each child benefits from a safe place to live, access to counseling services, and the opportunity to participate in extracurricular activities such as music, art, military leadership, robotics team, and athletics.

Glenwood Academy Data

•      Glenwood Academy is a privately funded 501(c)3.

•      100% of the students served qualify for the free or reduced lunch program and live below or at the poverty line.

•      85% of our students come from single-family homes; however, these homes average 4 to 5 people in the household. That means we have many single moms trying to take care of several kids.
