Short-Term (few weeks/months)
This project gives you the opportunity to spend an amazing time in Iceland with other international volunteers and to have an incredible experience where participants share their knowledge with each other while exploring creativity, environmental issues and intercultural learning.
Akranes is a port town in the west of Iceland, approximately 42 km from Reykjavik, lying at the tip of the peninsula separating Hvalfjörður and Borgarfjörður. The town sits at the base of the domineering basalt mountain Akrafjall (643m). The mountain top has some of the best panoramic views of West Iceland, from Faxafloi Bay to the Reykjanes Peninsula to Snaefellsjokull Glacier. The population of Akranes is around 6.700 inhabitants. The town is the service center for the West of Iceland. Volunteers will have environmental tasks in different areas around Akranes, for example cleaning the coastline, planting trees, taking down old fences, removing lupines or other plants and fixing hiking paths.
The work will depend on the weather conditions, which is why we have to be flexible. This is a perfect project for people who like outdoor work and physical challenges.
We will also focus on intercultural learning and exchange. Every evening, volunteers from different countries will present their country and culture in an informal way. It can be a presentation, a game, theater - the form of introduction is up to you. Therefore, we encourage you to bring along some food, photos, or anything interesting related to your country for a fun and informative evening with the other volunteers.
