Time Commitment

Part time (10-30 hrs/wk)

Duration

Short-Term (few weeks/months)

Overview

The Human Rights Foundation (HRF) is a nonpartisan nonprofit organization that promotes and protects human rights globally, with a focus on closed societies and authoritarian regimes. We focus on over 90 countries where individual freedoms and liberties are most at risk, and where democracies are non-existent or fraudulent. Our work includes effective campaigns to free political prisoners, international events such as the Oslo Freedom Forum, the education of U.S. students on the value and fragility of individual rights and democracy, and programs such as Flash Drives for Freedom that publicize human rights violators and directly support dissidents and human rights defenders at risk.

HRF is currently seeking fashion students interested in volunteering for an exciting research project at the intersection of fashion and human rights. Ideally, the volunteer will be working remotely part-time from mid-April 2019 through June 2019. The volunteer will contribute to a research project and future exhibition which highlights the politics and power that exist within the framework of fashion.

Purpose

The purpose of this project is to highlight a range of international cases where fashion has been used as a tool for oppression and social control by authoritarian regimes or have proven imperative for the right to freedom of speech and expression in the form of protest, advocacy, and resistance.

Responsibilities

This project will consist primarily of conducting research on past and present authoritarian regimes around the world.

The researcher will focus on finding particular instances where fashion garments have been used as a tool of protest or vehicle of oppression.

Qualifications

  • Well-organized, self-motivated and reliable, with a strong attention to detail
  • An interest in social impact/human rights causes, specifically concerning fashion is essential
  • Relevant coursework is highly desirable, and knowledge of internet-based research is essential
  • Computer skills (e.g. Microsoft Office, Google Suite) are required

Compensation

This is a volunteer opportunity. However, volunteers will work closely with HRF staff members and have the opportunity to attend special events related to human rights, including the Oslo Freedom Forum in New York.
