This position is sponsored by Strong City Baltimore in Baltimore, MD; and the VISTA member will serve with Archbishop Borders School in Baltimore, MD. Strong City sponsors 30 VISTA projects at nonprofit, government, and community organizations throughout Baltimore City and Maryland. Established in 1969 to help neighborhoods become safer, better places to live, Strong City's mission is to build and strengthen neighborhoods and people. Strong City will provide support to Archbishop Borders School and the VISTA member throughout the year, including recruitment, training, resources, and professional development opportunities, and meetings.

Archbishop Borders School (ABS) is a dual-language Catholic community school that prepares its students to be dynamic members of society through an educational experience informed by diversity, faith and academic excellence. ABS students' talents extend outside the classroom. In addition to receiving local scholarships, students have also participated in and won national film contests, trick or treated at the White House, and have been recognized for their athletic achievements on the field at M&T stadium.

Develop a model of workshops/classes for school families in Southeast Baltimore to navigate an English-speaking community, find better opportunities, and increase involvement in children’s education.

The Community Outreach Liaison VISTA will build the capacity of ABS by developing workshops/classes for school

families in Southeast Baltimore to navigate an English-speaking community. The VISTA resource will ensure

implementation of restorative practices in the classroom to foster better relationships among teachers, staff and students. The families will then be able to find better jobs and opportunities; navigate the educational system to better advocate their children's successes; see improved relationships among their children and school staff. VISTA efforts will empower families to learn career development; English language development, and navigation of PreK to college educational systems.

The VISTA will:

1) Develop a Community Outreach plan, using best practices for engaging families and community partners in

meaningful and robust ways across multiple socioeconomic and cultural differences.

2) Implement Community Outreach Plan through building partnerships with community organizations to design workshops various skills including technology,career, education system, fostering better relationships, self-regulation, and healthier conflict resolution skills.

3) Develop and implement transition plan to ensure the project sustainability

AmeriCorps VISTA (Volunteers in Service to America) is not a job per se, but a full time national service opportunity.

Benefits include: living allowance, relocation and child care assistance if eligible, health allowance, monthly travel reimbursement, choice of an education award or cash stipend, and non-competitive eligibility for federal employment upon completion. Preferred candidates will be at least 18 years of age, demonstrate relevant experience for the position, and exhibit professionalism, commitment to service, and leadership potential.
