Description

Volunteers provide much-needed support and assistance to KITOJO COMMUNITY VOCATIONAL TRAINING SCHOOL, a non-profit making organization dedicated to providing technical skills to students unable to continue their education into secondary school. Its aim is to promote girls’ education and take away poverty making a sustainable impact in the community.

Practical training is provided in knitting, sewing, agriculture, business management and other skills to aid self-sustainability. The project is severely understaffed and underfunded, which is why we are in urgent need of volunteers. For volunteers who truly want to make a difference to the lives of vulnerable children, this program serves to protect and care for those who need it most.

Vision & Mission:

To end the cycle of poverty in the local region – specifically those who grow up and subsequently fall into the rock quarry industry.

To provide students unable to attend secondary school with high-quality vocational skills by delivering an affordable learning environment with training from caring, experienced instructors.

Goals of this Project:

·      To increase capacity beyond 30 students per semester

·      To incorporate a sweater business targeted at producing uniforms for local schools

·      To become completely self-sustained

·      To expand curriculum into areas including: agribusiness, husbandry (poultry, piggery), hotel management

REQUIREMENTS

The Kitojo School welcomes all volunteers 18 years and over who wish to assist in the support and development of some of Uganda’s most marginalized children and young adults. You must be willing to work a minimum of 4 hours/day, five days per week. While this highly rewarding project does not require participants to have a background in the field of schooling, as there are many ways you can assist, volunteers with suitable education, qualifications or experience are highly sought after. Regardless, a volunteer’s individual role can often be tailored to suit their particular skills and interests. Volunteers on this project will need an understanding of English in order to communicate effectively with the children and local staff members. All applicants must of course display a genuine willingness to help, show drive, initiative and compassion, and bring a positive 'can-do' attitude. If this sounds like you, we want you on the team!
