Research Institute Without Walls is looking for a volunteer accountant. Our Bay Area Asylum Mental Health Project links San Francisco Bay Area immigration attorneys with mental health clinicians who can provide psychological evaluations for asylum seekers. The Project has over 60 clinicians in the Bay Area who provide pro bono or low fee evaluations for asylum seekers. We have served dozens of asylum seekers who otherwise would be unlikely to have their asylum application supported by the expertise of a licensed mental health clinician, when they present themselves to the Asylum Officer or Immigration Court. According to a study by Physicians for Human Rights, asylum seekers who have the benefit of a psychological or medical evaluation almost double their changes of receiving asylum: Without mental health or medical evaluation, 40% asylum grant. With an evaluation: 80% grant rate.

Our work helps double the chances that asylum seekers have their voice heard. Many asylum seekers are not effective witnesses on their behalf because of a history of multiple traumatic events. Mental health clinicians evaluate and provide expert opinion that helps explain what asylum seekers themselves may struggle to tell adjudicators.

The accounting help we need is to help us comply with the bookkeeping and reporting requirements of a not for profit and 501c3 organization. Our financial activity is minimal, so there is not a lot of hours needed, just expert guidance.

How To Apply

Dear idealist applicant,

Please email us directly at, with a brief description of your interest in working with asylum seekers and attach a CV.
