Description

AmeriCorps VISTA is a national service program in which members complete one-year capacity building projects in local communities. NYS Department of State, Division of Community Services is proud to sponsor the Empire Corps VISTA program, in which members help to reduce poverty in sixteen cities across New York State.


In Utica, the VISTA member will serve with Mohawk Valley Community Action Agency. They will use story telling as a conduit for giving voice to the poor, thus inspiring community action and change. The VISTA member will develop strategies for interviewing, collecting, and archiving stories (from staff, families and the community). Furthermore, the member will connect this work to larger agency systems that support data collection, marketing, communication and program development. The VISTA member will coordinate story telling activities with staff, agency advisories, families and the community. Additionally the member will create quarterly reports and identify new program initiatives for development.


VISTA members enjoy a variety of benefits, including a living allowance, health coverage, child care, and an education award upon successful completion of service.
