Building a children's playground and a protective wall for the school in Siru Bari, Nepal
- Volunteer Opportunity posted by CADIP
Full time (30+ hrs/wk)
Short-Term (few weeks/months)
Siru Bari is a remote village in the hilly regions of Nepal where the locals still live off the land. However, the community suffers from severe lack of funds and knowledge needed for improving the living standards and facilities. The youth in the village are highly impacted. Our main goal with this project is to bring better education for the youth and improve their school facilities. We will therefore engage in both construction and educational work at the school.
During the monsoon, when the ground is soft, the school is often affected by land- and mudslides and domestic cattle entering the area around the school. Therefore, our first task will be to build a fence around the school to protect against these issues. Our main construction task will be to dig out and construct a playground for the children and an area for the community to hold gatherings. The volunteers can also teach English, Math, Sports and/or Music at the school. Interaction with the kids and involving them in cultural exchange activities is encouraged.
Since you will be staying with a host family, you'll have the chance to experience the typical Nepali farm life: cutting grass, taking care of buffaloes and goats, harvesting vegetables, etc. Planting rice is an annual activity, deeply rooted in Nepalese culture. It's done during the monsoon, and if time permits, the volunteers are more than welcome to join their host family.

You can also explore some of the wonders of Nepal: Jungle Safari in Chitwan National Park (about 120 km from Siru Bari), Trekking in Annapurna Region. The trek starts from Besisahar and can be reached in 30 minutes from Bhote Odar.
Accommodation: The volunteers will stay with a local family. Each family can host up to three volunteers. You will experience their huge hospitality, friendliness and generosity and it is easily noticeable, that they truly enjoy having people staying with them. They are proud of their culture and will give you a good insight into Nepali life. Please bring your own sleeping bag and mattress. You will be served Dal Bhat (a soup of lentil or beans with boiled rice) and Tarkari (cooked vegetables) by your host family.
Arrival and orientation: All volunteers are requested to participate in an orientation meeting in Thamel, Kathmandu on the day before the project starts. Details about the local host, the project and the travel arrangements will be provided. All volunteers will travel together from Kathmandu to Bhote Odar by bus. It normally takes around 5 hours to get to Bhote Odar. From Bhote Odar, we'll walk two hours up the mountain on a beautiful trail to get to the village.
Location: Siru Bari is in Lamjung district, about 200 kilometers west of Kathmandu, in central Nepal. It is a small village with a population of approximately 500 people, all living in very traditional ways. It is situated on a hillside with beautiful views of the valley. For the volunteers, this will be a unique opportunity to experience rural Nepal and the traditional ways of living that unfortunately are becoming more and more uncommon.
