Public Health Fellow – Kalikot, Nepal

Position Type: Full-time, unpaid – room and board provided

The Public Health Fellow will work most intimately with the Oda Foundation’s medical team. This individual will be exposed to our current healthcare efforts and will help shape the organization’s future strategy. The Public Health Fellow will be exposed to our current primary healthcare center’s management and operational system, assisting with data accumulation and analysis as well as the creation of progress reports and monthly clinic reports. After being oriented to the Oda Foundation’s public health efforts to date, the Public Health Fellow will have the freedom to advise, adjust, and implement policies, procedures, and programs alongside our staff.

Much of this job entails working with and communicating effectively among marginalized Nepali communities with little to no English comprehension. Thus, the Public Health Fellow will arrive in Kathmandu, Nepal on August 1, 2019 and will take a month-long Nepali language course before traveling out to the Oda Foundation’s site in Kalikot. The Fellow should have a desire and excitement to dive head first into the Nepali language upon arrival in Nepal.

While public health will be the Fellow’s primary focus, she/he will have the freedom and creativity to dive into our education and community empowerment initiatives. All Fellows are strongly encouraged to pursue any interests they have within the entirety of Oda Foundation programming.

Such job responsibilities include, but are not limited to, social media content generation and uploads, weekly budgeting meetings with the Nepali Director, weekly telephone status updates with Oda’s two American Directors, grant writing and management, quarterly board meeting participation, sponsorship program management, and a variety of other general administrative duties.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Assisting in the coordination of preventative healthcare programs such as: youth group sessions, women’s circles, and student and community workshops
  • Using your own knowledge and online resources to identify relevant and needed curriculum for staff and community workshops
  • Assisting the medical team with data accumulation and analysis
  • Assisting the medical team with monthly clinic reports
  • Assisting the Oda Foundation’s Director of Community and Government Affairs with matters that require Oda Foundation intervention
  • Developing and producing social media content for Instagram, Facebook, and Odafoundation.org including photos, blog posts and videos

Successful candidates will have:

  • A desire to work in the public health or development sector, specifically in a developing country
  • Solid comprehension of Excel and the remainder of Microsoft Office
  • Strong organizational skills
  • A positive attitude with a proven track record for being a team player
  • An open-minded attitude towards living and working in extremely remote, rural Nepal. There are many challenges that accompany living and working in a developing country; fellows will have limited access to the internet and electricity
  • A strong work ethic and a genuine desire to make a difference in the lives of the people living in the Karnali State of Nepal
  • A cultural competence and patient nature towards dealing with a drastically different work environment than what is found in developed countries
  • A proven track record for success, whether this is academically or otherwise
