Volunteer with Behind the Book, a non-profit literacy organization that inspires New York City public school students to love reading. Through our rich, innovative programs, accomplished authors lead workshops in high-needs pre-K-12 classrooms, where they guide students in creating their own writing and art projects based on the theme of the author's book.
No experience or training is necessary to volunteer as a writing, research or art coach in the classroom. You'll support, engage, and encourage students as they work on their projects.
These workshops need your support at a school in Ft. Greene, Brooklyn. To sign up, please contact email@example.com with the program code. We'll supply the school address, directions, and other information when you're confirmed:
Date: Tuesday, October 24th, 2017
Time: 9:30 – 11:00 AM
Volunteer Role: Research Coach
About the workshop: Third-graders read Who Was Frida Kahlo? by Sarah Fabiny to learn about this celebrated Mexican artist, and explore how aspects of her life are reflected in her work. They’ll study Kahlo’s depictions of traditional Mexican dress, indigenous artifacts, and natural elements, as well as traditional items such as masks, clothing, and jewelry. Research coaches will assist students in gathering facts for their written pieces. *Spanish speakers greatly appreciated.*
