Founded in July 2016, AsylumWorks is a DC-based non-profit built on a simple premise: Immigration legal services are essential to a successful asylum case but they are rarely sufficient. Today, AsylumWorks (AW) provides asylum seekers and their families with holistic services and support to complement the work of immigration legal providers. Through direct services, education, and support, AW strengthens communities by empowering asylum seekers to rebuild their lives with dignity and purpose.

 AW seeks a part-time Storytelling and Social Media Volunteer to assist in identifying, designing, and executing digital media campaigns that promotes and amplifies AW’s mission and the stories of our clients. This position will be primarily virtual due to the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic with *optional* opportunities to periodically work at the AsylumWorks’ metro-accessible headquarters near Dupont Circle in NorthWest DC.

 This volunteer position will be supervised by the Development and Engagement Program Manager. The position will take place between September 2020-December 2020 with periodic check-ins and the possibility of renewal. 

 Responsibilities:

1. Program Specific

  • Co-Lead AW’s signature “Humans of Asylum” Instagram campaign that uses the transformative power of storytelling to humanize the lives and journeys of asylum seekers in the United States.
  • Create and publish creative social media content and campaigns that promote AW’s mission while helping to promote relevant partners, allies, and institutions within the vulnerable immigrant community.
  • Help draft and design Mailchimp e-blasts to volunteers, donors, and other key constituents.
  • When necessary, utilize graphic design platforms (Canva, Adobe, etc) to help create shareable graphics and pictures to share on AW’s digital platforms.

2. Administrative

  • Update and manage AW’s social media content calendar.
  • Participate in weekly supervisor check-in meetings.
  • Record meeting notes and transcribe interviews as needed.
  • Create spreadsheets of partners to follow on social media and conduct research on relevant content to share and promote. 
  • Report on weekly social media trends to measure changes in AW’s follower engagement.

Educational and Experience 

  • High school diploma or GED 
  • Enrollment in a degree-seeking program (Marketing, Communications, International Development, etc) preferred, but not required
  • Demonstrated up-to-date knowledge and proficiency working with social media platforms and trends (Instagram, Facebook, Twitter)
  • Proficiency in Mailchimp and Canva
  • Experience writing content for non-profit and/or mission-driven social media accounts 
  • Demonstrated interest in supporting immigrant populations and AW’s’ mission 
  • Experience working with low-income, limited English, vulnerable populations preferred.
  • Understanding of the asylum process helpful

 Required Skills

  • Ability to work collaboratively in an interdisciplinary setting
  • Ability to multitask and problem solve
  • A demonstrated awareness of cultural humility
  • Strong interpersonal communication skills
  • Ability to confidently use Microsoft Office software, Gmail and Google Drive 
  • Familiarity with Zoom 

Language

  • Strong English language skills
  • Bilingual language skills, particularly in French, Amharic, Arabic, or Spanish would be helpful, but not required.
