Oikocredit US is entering an exciting new chapter and seeking qualified candidates to serve on its national Board of Directors. While our US headquarters is in Seattle, our Board members are located around the country and we welcome candidates from anywhere in the United States.


About Oikocredit: Oikocredit International (OI) is a worldwide cooperative and social investor that that makes impact investments in Africa, Asia and Latin America to sustainably improve the living standards of low-income people. OI provides loans, equity investments and capacity building grants to small to medium enterprises that are active in financial inclusion, sustainable agriculture and renewable energy. The organization currently has more than €1.3 billion invested in 674 partner organizations in more than 70 countries worldwide. Individual and institutional investors from 12 countries including the United States have provided the capital needed for these investments. Oikocredit US (OUS) is a 34-year-old, 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization that supports the impact of OI. We generate financial support for and raise awareness of OI’s impact investing and capacity building activities around the world. OUS is led by a volunteer board of directors, which currently consists of members located in Minnesota, Pennsylvania and Washington State. Our office is based in Seattle and staffed by an Interim Executive Director, with additional support from a part-time Operations Consultant and Communications Manager.  More details are online at www.oikocreditusa.org.


Desired Qualifications of Directors:

  • Demonstrated passion for social and economic justice on a global scale
  • Professional or academic skills and experience in one or more of the following areas: finance, fundraising, international development, marketing, microfinance, nonprofit governance, philanthropy, and socially responsible investing 
  • Preferred: prior nonprofit board member experience or past participation in formal board training


Responsibilities of Directors:

  • Attend the OUS annual meeting, board retreat and planning efforts, and support Oikocredit at a personally meaningful level of time, talent and charitable giving
  • Regularly attend board meetings
  • Actively participate in committee work, and seek out new candidates for board or committee service when needed
  • Since our Board is geographically dispersed, most participation can be done remotely 


Length of term:

Terms are three years. Directors may serve two consecutive terms, and may be reelected to the Board after a one-year hiatus.


Meetings and Time Commitment:

  • The full board of directors meets via webconference on the second Saturday of each month
  • Working group and committee meetings take place once per month


International Travel (optional):

  • Board membership may also include the opportunity for international travel to conferences and meetings related to Oikocredit’s broader international governance, as well as occasional study tours to visit project partners in the field
