TechnoServe is seeking qualified candidates to join our Fellows Program. Fellows take part in field-based projects ranging from 3 to 12 months in which they engage directly with entrepreneurs, industry experts, TechnoServe field staff and other stakeholders.

Fellows have the opportunity to lead projects in areas such as business plan development, industry analysis, government policy, financial analysis and capital-raising. A typical Fellows project might be conducting an Industry Strategic Plan (ISP). ISPs are a standard part of our approach to assessing the potential competitiveness, opportunities, challenges and key success factors in a given sector at both the country and regional levels.

We review Fellow applications for our general candidate database on a rolling basis, and encourage qualified, enthusiastic candidates to apply.

Current opportunities exist in Africa, Latin America & the Caribbean, and India. In particular, we wish to highlight the following roles for which we are actively recruiting:

Cote d'Ivoire, Ghana, Tanzania: Identify investment opportunities for TechnoServe's partner, a global manufacturer of agricultural inputs, to fill in the gaps in various agriculture supply chains that limit opportunities for increased farmer incomes. The Fellow will analyze production and processing landscapes across agricultural markets, test the hypothesis that insufficient capital is the primary constraint on agricultural sector growth and that existing sources of capital are insufficient to address the gap, such as by interviewing businesses within priority crops and mapping current constraints on growth, and create a framework for partnership and investment. (French proficiency required)

Mozambique and Zambia: Craft a strategic plan to collaboratively improve the effectiveness of Chinese-invested Agriculture Technology Development Centres (ATDC), technology and innovation hubs, in Mozambique and Zambia. The Fellow will conduct an analysis of the poultry and rice industries, develop a vision of the future of the industry, and recommend interventions for TechnoServe to catalyze growth. (Based in Maputo or Lusaka)

Kenya: Develop a road map and strategy for a radical transformation of the mango sub-sector through market system facilitation for TechnoServe Kenya. The Fellow will diagnose the mango market, develop new post-harvest losses initiatives, and build sustainable models that can be implemented by different market actors to transform the industry for the benefit of small holder farmers. (Based in Nairobi)

Fellow Candidate Profile

The process for becoming a Fellow is highly selective.

In assessing a candidate’s fit with this opening, we will consider the following:

  • Demonstrated problem-solving and analytical skills, typically through experience with a management consulting firm
  • Superior communication skills
  • Proven ability to develop an industry or client strategy (including familiarity with developing issue trees, prioritization matrices, etc., to guide one’s approach)
  • Ability to structure and manage complex tasks
  • Ability to develop clear storylines and presentations
  • Ability to work independently
  • Evidence of creativity, flexibility and resourcefulness
  • Enthusiasm for contributing to TechnoServe's mission.

Fees & Expenses

TechnoServe will cover work-related costs of foreign travel – including airfare, in-country, accommodation, visa, and per diem – for most projects. These expenses are agreed upon in advance in a contract. Please note that as Fellows are working in a volunteer capacity, TechnoServe cannot provide fees for services rendered.
