Description

American Councils for International Education seeks volunteers in the Washington, D.C. area to evaluate applications of high school students applying to State Department-sponsored scholarship youth exchange programs. This is a unique opportunity to change a young person’s life and be part of a worldwide public diplomacy effort.

Students on the Future Leaders Exchange (FLEX) and Kennedy-Lugar Youth Exchange and Study (YES) programs spend one year living in the U.S. with volunteer host families and attending high schools. Both programs are sponsored by the Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs (ECA); American Councils for International Education administers the recruitment and selection of students. To date, these enduring programs number over 38,000 alumni..

FLEX participants are selected from Armenia, Azerbaijan, Czechia, Estonia, Georgia, Hungary, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Latvia, Lithuania, Moldova, Mongolia, Montenegro, Poland, Romania, Serbia, Slovakia, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, and Ukraine. YES students selected by American Councils are from Albania, Bulgaria, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Kosovo, Macedonia, and Senegal.

Our volunteers call this “The best run volunteer program I have ever experienced,” and believe that “The only way to promote peace is to understand that people are not so different regardless of their cultures; the best way to show this is to immerse yourself in a culture, so I feel that assisting in this process is well worth my time.”
