Sustainable farming and agriculture is vital to the rural communities in Ghana which serves as their only means of income and volunteers can make a difference by helping nurture agriculturally-dependent economies and offering assistance to the small farmers to get their products on the local and possibly on the international market. Volunteers on the project will have a lot of freedom to pursue their passion within the field, whether its genetics and breeding, agro forestry and conservation. Volunteer will work on the Agriculture Project involving both crop farming (Vegetables and Fruits)
A volunteer in this project can assist in numerous ways depending on your interest including:
Research into soil preparation and irrigation methods, Research trials involving various crops and growing methods, Helping schools in the area to develop a small school farm so that the schools can be more self-sufficient, Identify market structures and channels in the supply & distribution chain;
Teach basic business practices, example general business planning, Assist in organizing networks of local farmers.
Please note, machinery is limited on this project and most work is very labor intensive. Volunteers should bring gloves, flashlight, and light weight scarf for sun protection or hat, insect repellent, working boots, water bottle (all can be purchased in Ghana).
Volunteers will be involved in clearing land for growing crops, assisting with fertilizing the land, developing land for cropping, planting crops, nurturing crops, and teaching farming techniques to local staff.
This project is open to volunteers taking a gap year, career break, or a volunteer vacation and also volunteers with no qualification can also apply for this project. However, specialized skills such as agronomy, horticulture, agriculture, environment and background knowledge of giving extension services to farmers. The volunteers will be rotating and giving support in different farms
